Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay born August 24, 72 from Long Beach California. DuVernay was encouraged to pursue her love of the arts by her aunt Denise as a young child. The aunt who was a night shift nurse, let her pursue art literature and the theatre in daylight. DuVernay quickly was captivated after showing her the 1959 West Side Story film. DuVernay learned by example the power of art as an instrument for social activism. DuVernay's mother also had social consciousness and taught DuVernay how to convey messages via art. Although DuVernay was raised living in Compton with her family, she spent every summer at Lowndes County Alabama where her father's family grew up for generations. Her father was awed by the historical Civil Rights march through the Edmund Pettus Bridge in the nearby town of Selma Alabama. DuVernay visited Selma during the summers and was later motivated to make a documentary about the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay graduated from Saint Joseph High School at Lakewood in California in the year 1990. DuVernay enrolled at the University of California Los Angeles following her graduation, and was awarded qualifications in English and African American Studies. DuVernay began to develop an interest in the field of broadcast journalism while a student. She began as an intern for CBS News during the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay remembers being assigned to observe the house of a member of the jury and go through their garbage. As a result of her work she began to feel dissatisfied by journalism, and shifted into the publicity business. DuVernay found a job immediately out college, as a publicist in the young age of a studio. The DuVernay Agency is her first agency for public relations. In addition to PR her agency also created a variety of social media and lifestyle networks, including Urban Beauty Collective, the Urban Beauty Collective, Urban Thought Collective, Urban Eye and HelloBeautiful.
